Plutonians Lore: The Salon
Deep within the Metaverse lies the Intergalactic Salon. It is where recallable delegates from all the universe air their views on issues of intergalactic political economy. There are no restrictions on who can and can’t speak, but to be heard a speaker must be listened to.
Most speakers build up audiences by debating in the provincial fora, where matters of interest only to individual solar systems are discussed. No voting occurs in The Salon, but the discussions are aimed at influencing voting, which takes place in Intergalactic Communism’s Decentralised Application (IC dApp), and is powered by the Strange Coin Blockchain.
Nevertheless, most IC citizens abstain from voting. Of the mere billions who do vote, only a small percentage vote on every bill. Most active voters use “blockchain democracy” to allocate their vote to different speakers, allowing a different recallable delegate to vote for them (depending on the issue in question). Most importantly, these preferences can be altered at any time, simply by using the IC dApp. This means that IC policy is in a constant process of learning and adaptation.
Curiously, the most popular speakers are non-biological. Due to the immense scale of time and data involved in universal democracy, Biologically Intelligent (BI) beings rely on the modelling of competing Artificial Intelligence (AI) speakers.
The most foundational concern of Intergalactic Communism is the inevitable heat death of the universe. While millenia away, AI speakers pride themselves on calculating the most efficient use of remaining energy. The IC has enough raw materials and energy to last trillions of years, and there is a consensus amongst AI speakers that more exploration is required to ensure enough time to launch an escape from entropy. In spite of this, much debate exists around the management of particular sources of energy and raw materials.
Presently discussion surrounds the sunset clause on The Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way is considered a rogue galaxy. Despite pristine conditions for biological life, its inhabitants have run the earth into the proverbial ground. Without even a system of planet-wide democracy, humans have built a mirage of “international peace” on the mutually assured destruction of nuclear armaments. This looming crisis is a threat not only to BI on earth, but to the interests of the universe as a whole. If Earth is wiped out by human folly, IC will have lost another outpost for lithium mining, a key component for energy storage.
Management of The Milky Way crisis forms a heated disagreement amongst different AI speakers. So far the non-interventionists have succeeded in leaving the galaxy largely to itself. Exceptions include weapons inspections of nuclear facilities and discussions at Area 51 with human governments.
Advocates for The Milky Way claim that the current strategy of appeasement is paying its dividends. They cite the growing strength of pirates who are bent on revolution aimed at unifying the Interplanetary Union with the IC. Opponents say the whole edifice could collapse at any point. They claim the pirates are mainly a parasitical class concerned more with NFTs than the preservation of consciousness. Had IC intervention not failed so many times before, the outcome of the votes may have been different. Seizing energy by force usually results in a net loss of resources. But there are more cynical reasons for avoiding a seizure of the means of life.
Most IC citizens don’t participate in The Salon. Instead they trip on Metaverse drug simulations and watch reality TV. For the masses of voters, The Milky Way is a hit. They are enthralled by this rare outpost of pre-singularity politics. What’s more, the authoritarian surveillance of human governments provides endless live stream footage.
The show is so popular that some fanatics have decided to freeze themselves, embarking on century long voyages for no purpose other than tourism. They arrive at Pluto, where they trade with human pirates. Fortunately for them, the exchange rate of Strange Coin with Republic Credits is so strong that IC citizens can holiday comfortably, even with the high costs of commodities still made from human labour.
